The Mental Game

The Mental Game

Getting in shape isn’t easy. The work you put in is hard and your body feels tired, sore, and sometimes you want to quit. The mental aspect of fitness is not something we talk about that often but it should be. Overcoming the desire to quit can be significantly harder than any workout you ever do.Learning patience and giving yourself time to grow and adapt to new abilities is difficult. Doing the little things that make big differences takes a long-term view on health. Most of us think in terms of how fast we can lose our spare tires….Getting your head in the game will make what you do in the gym that much more incredible.Learning new movements and how to control your body takes time. It’s like martial arts. No one expects to walk into a Karate Dojo and test out for Black Belt the first day they walk in the door. It takes years of training to do that. You’ve spent years training your body to be out of shape. You have to wrap your head around a few concepts as quickly as possible or success is going to be a lot harder to achieve. Why are you doing it?This is the most important question you can ask yourself. I’m not talking about losing 10 pounds,  getting back to your college weight, or even because your doctor said you need to. I’m talking about knowing what the changes you want to make will do for your everyday life and the impact they will have on you and everyone in your life. Your decision to get healthy has a much bigger impact than just losing some weight. What does it mean to you? How will your life change? What will you be able to do? Who will you inspire and what kind of example will your effort provide for others? Getting out of shape doesn’t come by accident. It is a deliberate action, repeated over and over, producing a result. The law of inertia means that it will take a MORE deliberate action, repeated over and over with MORE consistency in order to reverse the fitness and health to a positive point. The only thing that will keep you going is knowing why you’re doing it. Your “why” has to be bigger than your “but". TheThe ProcessUnderstanding what’s happening and working with the process instead of fighting it is key. We’re impatient, we want results quickly. When it comes to your health and fitness time is your ally, not your enemy. There are three words to engrain in your thought process.

This is the process of developing health and fitness. Teach your body how to move. Learn what proper execution and movement feels like. Experience what it means to work hard and do work under stress. Get comfortable being uncomfortable, BEFORE you make the work harder. You don’t learn to juggle 3 chainsaws your first day in juggling school. Get it in your head from the start that little steps lead to big accomplishments. Trust your coaches to guide you and be patient. We see this a lot with people who have been in the program for a while. They’ve started seeing results, they’re understanding what they can do more and more. They tend to try and jump over steps in the quest for “the next” thing. It’s a long term process. Just because you’ve been in the program for 1, 2, 3, or more years doesn’t mean the process stops. There are no elevators. Take the stairs to the top. LittleLittle ThingsFollowing the program means listening to your coaches and doing the little things they suggest will help you improve. This is one of the hardest things for many to do. There’s already been a paradigm shift in adjusting schedules and making time for the gym and improving nutrition habits. Who has time to spend 10 minutes, stretching, doing shoulder or core work at home? Everyone does. Stop making excuses and spend 10 minutes a day doing something that will change your life. We only get to spend 3-5 hours a week with you. You have to do something for yourself. This is the secret that makes our program so successful…….What you do at the gym is just the tip of the iceberg. We want to educate, inform, and empower you to take control of your fitness, health, and life outside of the gym. You have to want that. Embrace it. Do the little things that will make the big difference in your everyday. OneOne step after the other already taken a big step. You’ve started the process. Keep taking those steps. Follow the path we’ve put in front of you. Ask for guidance, use your support system and everyone else in the community who is walking the path with you. Be patient and keep putting in the work. Good things are happening. Even if you can’t see it yet. Desire more personal attention to get the elusive pull up, muscle up, or get better at the Clean & Jerk?
